    Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

    In the field linguistics, DCT is one of the most useful tools for analyzing communication behaviors of learners. It can be used to study various issues, including manner of speaking, turn-taking, and lexical choices. It can be used to assess the phonological complexity of learners in their speech.

    Recent research has used an DCT as an instrument to test the refusal skills of EFL students. Participants were 46 CLKs at the upper-intermediate who participated in MQs, DCTs and RIs. They were also asked to think about their evaluations and refusal performances in RIs. The results revealed that CLKs frequently chose to defy native Korean pragmatic norms. Their decisions were influenced primarily by four factors such as their personality and multilingual identities, their ongoing life histories as well as their relationships. The coding results are then compared with the original RI transcripts to determine how well they accurately portrayed the underlying behavior.

    Refusal Interviews (RIs)

    The most important issue in research on pragmatics is: Why do some learners choose not to accept native-speaker norms? Recent research has attempted to answer this question with a variety of experimental tools, including DCTs MQs and RIs. The participants were comprised of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. They were required to complete the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs either in their L1 or L2. They were then invited to an RI, where they were required to reflect and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.

    The results showed that CLKs on average, did not adhere to the norms of native speakers in more than 40 percent of their responses. They did this even when they were able to create patterns that were similar to natives. They were also aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their choice to learner-internal factors such as their personalities and multilingual identities. They also referred external factors, like relational affordances. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors led to a more relaxed performance in relation to the linguistic and intercultural norms of their university.

    The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures or consequences they could be subject to if their local social norms were violated. They were worried that their native friends would perceive them as "foreigners" and believe that they are unintelligent. This concern was similar in nature to the concerns expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

    These findings suggest that native speakers' pragmatic norms are not the default preference for Korean learners. They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency testing. Future researchers should reassess the applicability of these tests in different contexts and in particular situations.
