It also comes with a powerful battery which can clean for two hours before returning to its dock automatically once the bin is full.

It also comes with the feature of smart mapping, which makes use of multiple sensors to identify the areas in your home that need attention and make a tidy route around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of maneuvering around toys abandoned on the floor or furniture legs that stick out from under things. It also has a sensor that will snap Roomba to its real-world location if it begins to wander away from its original position.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom that do not have bristles, and thus tend to be more resistant to tangles than the previous models. These are also a little taller than previous rollers and can better fit under beds and couches with low sides and are designed to let this model move more easily on varying flooring types.

The Roomba 980 differs from other models with a high-end price tag by its brand new dirt detection feature that makes use of cameras to identify dirt that has been embedded. This is a nice improvement over the previous model, which relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around a room and clean everything at least three times from different angles.

In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. It scored very well on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a decent job of removing pet hair, but it was struggling with very long and thick pet fur that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the Best robot vacuum and mop on amazon performing robots on our list, despite these minor limitations. It's also not as expensive as other top-of the-line models. It's got plenty of features we'd expect to find in a flagship model however it lacks all the fancy apps or smart home integration that are found in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get running right away. After you have removed the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all that you need to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its large "Clean" button and let it go to work. It will return to docking station when it runs out of batteries or is full of debris. There are also indicator lights on top that indicate the bin is empty, or when it needs to recharge, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
