3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheel buggy is great for rough terrain providing the most comfortable ride for your baby. They are also easier to push and manoeuvre than a four-wheel buggy, particularly those with fabric slings or seat units, which are tightly positioned in the frame and provide the best shape and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheeled buggy offers excellent stability, which is the reason it's an ideal choice for off road walking (especially with an all terrain or off-road-style seat). They typically have larger front wheels, which cope well with bumps and kerbs and rough ground. Some even feature a lockable front tire for extra stability on uneven terrain.

It's worth bearing in mind that 3 wheel compact stroller-wheel buggies may have a lower centre of gravity than models with four wheels which means that they topple over more easily. That said, the best 3-wheel pushchairs are designed with perfect geometry and engineering to ensure they are stable in all weather conditions. They should be able to turn on a dime and be easy to steer using one hand. They also have the ability to rotate 360o on the front wheel which makes them ideal to navigate difficult terrain.

For surfaces that are extremely challenging be sure to choose an air-filled model also known as pneumatic tyres. They are designed to handle non-paved tracks and should cope with dirt, gravel, and more. It is easier to push, and is lighter to kerb-pop (you cannot underestimate how many times you will do this as a new parent!).

The seats do not recline fully, but they can be lowered down to the lowest point. This should allow your child to have plenty of headroom and space.

A sling made of fabric is also available. It has the advantage that it is located inside the frame, rather than on top as a seat that is modular. This creates a lower center of gravity with perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push especially when you're on bumpy terrain or curbs and MFM reviewer Kath loved the way this type of seat dealt with these obstacles.

This type of buggy has an enormous basket, along with other useful features like an extendable hood with 50+ UV protection, a simple to use brake pedal and a few innovative lights for visibility that can be positioned in front of the occupants for improved safety on difficult terrain.

The 3-wheeled frame is more sturdy and can be moved by one hand. It's also better for terrain that is difficult. However, it means that the shopping basket doesn't hold as much as a four-wheeled buggy.

A top-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a cushioned grip for comfort and excellent suspension. It should also be able to take a carrycot and car seat and you can use it from birth.

MFM's reviewers have found that the 3-wheeler frame won't fit through all the doors of their homes or small car boots - make sure you check the dimensions of the buggy once it's folded before purchasing if you're worried about space.

It's worth looking into a 3-wheeler that can take 2 (or even 3!) This is the most suitable option for your future and can save you money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is one of the most well-known. It can be used as early as day dot as a single buggy and later converted into twin buggies after your baby is walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more comfortable. You'll find these on pushchairs, such as the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath discovered to provide "an amazing ride for my toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres of the Phil and Ted's Sport made it easier for her to maneuver around the kerbs as well as other obstacles.

They can be tricky to keep inflated and will need to be replenished regularly. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, so you should always have an repair kit and spare inner tube with you when you're out and out and about.

PU tyres are typically used on pushchairs since they are a cheaper option than air-filled tyres, but they are just as robust. You can recognise PU tyres by their matte appearance and soft texture. They also slide across flat and tidy surfaces.
